For most of the SAME Young Engineers, the highlight of the day came when they had an opportunity to operate a D6 Dozer and 924 Loader -- with some Seabee assistance -- on board NCBC Gulfport, Miss., May 17-18. In true Seabee spirit, NCBC Gulfport hosted the first SAME Young Engineers Day, May 17-18. Capt. Rick Burgess, commanding officer and commodore of the 20th Seabee Readiness Group (SRG), invited SAME members for a basewide tour and a ringside introduction to the Navy s Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) and Naval Construction Force (NCF). Fifteen junior members attended, including environmental, civil, structural and mechanical engineers, as well as one architect, and came from five states. "Young Engineers Day with the Seabees was an experience I ll never forget," said one SAME participant. "By exposing us to construction projects and allowing us to engage in typical Seabee tasks, [such as] driving a loader or touring on a convoy simulator, it allowed us to gain a better understanding of the Seabee mission."
