st Class Deanna Dimeo, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 5, was named the 2013 Pacific Fleet (PACFLT) Shore Sailor of the Year (SOY), March 28.
It is such an honor for me to represent not just the Pacific Fleet, but a Navy Expeditionary Combat Command and the Seabees, said Dimeo, My goal has always been to do my very best at all aspects of my job, from rating expertise to knowledge of Navy-wide programs and policies to taking care of Sailors.
The award was announced by Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet. According to Harris, approximately 100,000 PACFLT Sailors competed for the SOY awards.
They do not accept second-best at anything they put their minds to. They re winners, always have been, always will be, Harris said during the award ceremony. They exemplify the highest standards of service to our nation, at home and abroad, at sea and shore, in combat and in peace.
According to Command Master Chief Corey Heinrich of NCG 1,
Dimeo s hard work and dedication became apparent when she stated facts and opinions on current events and debate topics that are currently prominent to the Navy.
Her opinions really leverage all of the programs that are in place to help Sailors and Marines become successful to the Navy, and that s the institutional expertise of being a Sailor, said Heinrich.
Dimeo will be competing for Naval Operations Shore Sailor of the Year in Washington, D.C., April 15-18.
The U.S. Navy s Sailor of the Year award recognizes dedicated Sailors who exemplify the epitome of honor, courage and commitment. Established in 1973, the program began with fleet Sailors. The following year, the program expanded to include outstanding shore Sailors who go above and beyond the call of duty.
