POINT LOMA, Calif. Three Seabees deployed from Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) Mobile Utilities Support Equipment (MUSE) Division completed the annual inspection of three 800-kilowatt power plants used to support pier operations at Point Loma in San Diego County.
The three power plants stationed at Point Loma strictly provide emergency power to moored submarines in the event of utility failure.
Beginning in 2012, EXWC MUSE was selected to provide mission critical assistance due to their reliability, familiarity with electrical power, and substantial cost avoidancesaving the US Navy over in $307K over the past several years.
Point Loma currently serves as a readiness port, providing unparalleled quality and support to fleet and shore commands, enabling activities to maintain maximum fleet combat readiness at all times. Point Loma is also home to several major tenant units, including the Space and Naval Ware System Command, Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Command, and Submarine Squadron 11.
The deployment of EXWC MUSE assets enables the pier-side operation of Point Loma to move ahead without delay. Historically, Point Loma has had a reliable power grid; however, in recent years there have been cases where power was lost to the base due to equipment failure. During these periods of failure, visiting submarines noticed no interruption of power to their ship due to the use of EXWC MUSE assets.
