Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Hawaii Commanding Officer Capt. Michael Williamson presented BU1(SCW) Marco Wood with a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Gold Star in Lieu of Fifth Award) to commemorate his selection as the Command s Sailor of the Year (SOY) 2013, Feb. 4.
Wood was born in Bad Hersfeld, Germany. He enlisted in the Navy in May 1996 and attended boot camp in Illinois. Upon completion, he moved to Gulfport, Miss., to attend Builder A School. He reported to his first duty station at Navy Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4, Port Hueneme, Calif. Throughout his career, Wood has been deployed to numerous duty stations including Cuba, Okinawa, Korea, Greece, Spain and Iraq.
He arrived at Self Help and held the Demolition and Infrastructure Command Assessment Program (ICAP) leading petty officer position before becoming the unit s leading petty officer in June 2013.
If I work hard for the Sailors under my command, they will work hard for me, said Wood.
And the results show that he provides a positive environment at Self Help. As the leading petty officer he raised advancement rate exams by 10 percent. There were zero alcohol-related incidents and zero safety mishaps. In addition, the group achieved 100 percent military training completion and overall moral of Self Help personnel is at an all-time high.
