Husband and wife team, PS2 Damien Baisden, 22nd NCR, Task Force Stethem, and AO3 Tatiana Coles, Patrol Squadron 16 (VP-16), re-enlisted together via videoconference, May 1.
After serving a combined 12 years of service to their country, husband and wife team Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Damien Baisden, 22 NCR, and Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Tatiana Coles, Patrol Squadron 16 (VP-16), re-enlisted as they served 3,900 miles apart Baisden in Afghanistan and Coles in Okinawa, Japan. PS2 Baisden and AO3 Coles reenlisted with the help of Capt. Kathryn Donovan, commodore, 22nd NCR, Task Force Stethem.
Re-enlistments happen every day, but every once in a while a unique scenario comes along. Youve heard the story of Sailors re-enlisting while skydiving or scuba diving, but this one made history. Connected via video teleconference, Capt. Donovan administered the oath of enlistment to both husband and wife on two separate continents simultaneously. The service members mirror themselves with six years of Navy service and dedication to six more years of service.
Looking toward the future, they anticipate staying Navy until they hit their 20-year mark or maybe even longer.
"Ill see what she wants to do," Baisden grinned. "This re-enlistment was a milestone for us. I told her I will do whatever she wants. I really wouldn't mind staying in just to keep a steady paycheck. And I love her so much."
"Here are two Sailors who are willing to stick it out together," said Donovan. "As we all know, being in the Navy today can be challenging, and in some cases stressful on families. The fact that this family, both highly respected petty officers, decided to each give six more years to their country is a great testimony not only to their patriotism, but also to the entire Navy. Today you made history."
