Naval Mobile Construction Battalions (NMCBs) 18 and 40 received the second highest unit award given in combat the Valorous Unit Award from the U.S. Army, for work performed with other military units in Afghanistan s Zhari District.

For extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. During the period 1 September 2010 to 10 November 2010, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 502d Infantry Regiment and its subordinate units exhibited an outstanding degree of gallantry, determination and esprit de corps in support of Operation Enduring Freedom while engaged in military operations in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. While conducting combat operations in the Zhari District, Kandahar Province, the Soldiers gallantly and aggressively conducted numerous clearance operations to dislodge a determined and prepared enemy force. While under the constant threat of improvised explosive device attacks and often under heavy enemy fire, the unit repeatedly and successfully assaulted the enemy s prepared defensive positions. With disregard for their safety, Talon Soldiers responded rapidly to the ever-changing tactical situation, always capturing the initiative, pressing the fight and exploiting success. The unit viciously but judiciously attacked the enemy, allowing Coalition Forces to clear and hold territory the enemy had controlled for the past nine years. Working tirelessly throughout the period, the Soldiers completed their mission and devastated enemy strongholds in Zhari. The unit s valorous efforts and dedication to mission accomplishment dealt a severe blow to the enemy forces in Regional Command-South and significantly contributed to the Global War on Terrorism in Afghanistan. The extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty displayed by the members of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 502d Infantry Regiment and its subordinate units is in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects distinct credit upon the unit, the Strike Brigade, the 101st Airborne Division and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
