131001-N-AW868-028 GULFPORT, Miss. (Oct. 1, 2013) Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsman hold a salute as the plane carrying 91 World War II (WWII) veterans from the Gulfport area taxis to the arrival gate as they returned from their 1-day trip visiting war memorials in Washington, D.C. and Arlington National Cemetery as part of Honor Flight VI at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport. According to the Honor Flight website, Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices. The veterans are transported to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – WWII survivors, along with other veterans who may be terminally ill. The Mississippi veterans made national headlines as they crossed barriers to visit the closed WWII memorial during the government shutdown.
