Seabees assigned to ELEVEN have been working away on the Wiggins Police Department project site over the past few weeks and are beginning to transfer project responsibility to NMCB-1 this week. (Courtesy NMCB 11/Facebook) One of the unique challenges that our project crew faces, is the degree and manner in which they [Seabees] interact with the customer, said Lieutenant Michael Howland, NMCB 11 s Wiggins site project manager. Our project supervisor, CE1 Robison, is doing a fantastic job interfacing with city engineers, translating our Seabee construction practices and capabilities into terms and methods the customer is accustomed to from working with civilian contractors. The Seabees of NMCB-11 and NMCB 22 are nearing the end of their homeport projects phase and will be turning over the site to members of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 1 prior to deployment. Right now, each of the specific ratings involved with the project are doing a turn over with their counterpart from NMCB-1 , said Builder 2nd Class Melissa Vinsant. They are checking the progress of the work completed so they know exactly where to pick up and where it needs to go. Partnering with local communities is nothing new to the Seabees. Since their inception during World War II, Seabees have built or refit critical and non-critical infrastructure throughout the United States and the world. It is truly amazing that we get to give back, said Vinsant. It has been a wonderful experience working with this fantastic crew, knowing that our efforts are making a great impact in the community of Wiggins. Homeported in Gulfport, Mississippi, NMCB 11 is part of the Naval Construction Force (NCF). The NCF is a vital component of the U.S. Maritime Strategy and is comprised of deployable battalions capable of providing contingency construction, disaster preparation and recovery support, humanitarian assistance, and combat operations support.
