The exercise helped evaluate the battalion as the Bees of 11 prepare for their Field Training Exercise (FTX) later this year. CPX is an exercise focused on establishing and maintaining communication networks during operations. More than 250 NMCB-11 Seabees completed different scenarios to demonstrate effective and accurate communications between a combat operation center, Entry Control Point (ECP), detachments and company post. CPX not only provides an opportunity for company personnel to work on communication and tactical decision making during the exercise, but exercises actual command interoperability to accomplish a common task as a team , said Lt. Michael Scaplehorn, NMCB-11 Operations Exercise Officer. NMCB-11 s Air Detachment conducted their portion of CPX at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Their training covered mission planning, convoys, occupying objectives, fire plan development, patrol and ECP operations. In addition, they demonstrated securing new areas, establishing communications and setting up camp. CPX in the field is great preparation for FTX , said Electronics Technician 2nd Class Amber Campaign. It really forces you to get in a combat mindset, more so than on base [Gulfport]. Following CPX, NMCB-11 will take their lessons learned and move into FTX which will ultimately evaluate the battalion s combat and construction readiness and capabilities in a contingency environment, and serves to certify the battalion as deployment ready. NMCB units have mastered the task tailored force package said Scaplehorn. Training prior to deployment is designed to build from CPX to FTX in order to sharpen these skills in an environment where these subordinate units are artificially distributed. Homeported in Gulfport, Mississippi, NMCB-11 is part of the Naval Construction Force (NCF). The NCF is a vital component of the U.S. Maritime Strategy and are comprised of deployable battalions capable of providing contingency construction, disaster preparation and recovery support, humanitarian assistance, and combat operations support.
