The event also included softball, kickball, flag football, and other games and activities on NBVC Port Hueneme, Calif. Holding with tradition, the Naval Construction Training Center (NCTC) celebrated the 73rd birthday of the U.S. Navy Seabees at Stinger s Field, Port Hueneme, Calif. In addition to food and fellowship, one of the main highlights of the event was the presentation of the FY14 Retention Excellence Award by Capt. Kevin Brown, commanding officer, Center for Seabees and Facilities Engineering, for NCTC s dedication to career motivation and commitment to the professional and personal development of its Sailors. The Retention Award, also known as the Golden Anchor, is granted to commands by the U.S. Department of the Navy for sustaining superior levels of military retention. It was truly an honor to receive this award on behalf of NCTC, said Navy Counselor 1st Class Cisco Hernandez, NCTC career counselor. The fact that the presentation of this award coincided with the Seabee Birthday was definitely icing on the cake. During the Seabee Birthday celebration, NCTC students and staff participated in a number of activities including softball, kickball, flag football, Ultimate Frisbee and Kronom, an emerging favorite among students and staff. The event also provided an opportunity for A School to students compete in a Seabee history-themed trivia game for prizes that donated by the Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) commissary.

The award was presented for dedication to career motivation and commitment to the professional and personal development of its Sailors. The event was attended by more than 200 students and staff. Cmdr. Dan Cook, NCTC commanding officer, also took this opportunity to recognize the dedication and superior performance of several NCTC civilian employees by presenting Command coins to Denise Mix, Rich Wooley and Angela Mora during the event. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful team and this happy occasion to take time and celebrate our heritage, said Cook. It's an awesome tradition for NCTC and always a lot of fun. We really appreciate the hard work by the staff, particularly EO1 Bradley Adams and Ms. Angela Mora, and the support from DECA and the NBVC commissary that made this event so enjoyable for all of us.
